Social media at forefront of the job market

In March, a business woman called Sheryl Sandberg hit the headlines after becoming the first senior executive to jump from Google’s management team to another company. The former head of Google’s online ad sales defected to become chief operating officer at a little social media company you may have heard of called Facebook.

Nor was she the first to switch allegiances. Over the past 18 months Facebook have also recruited Gideon Yu, the former chief financial officer of Googlr unit YouTube, and Benjamin Ling, the engineer credited with creating Google Checkout. And now this string of major coups for Facebook (Google has long ranked as one of the world’s most desirable employers) appears to have opened the floodgates for jobs in this extremely fast growing industry.

Matt Rhodes from our sister company FreshNetworks posted on their blog earlier today about the boom in roles in this sector. According to data from ReadWriteWeb, one in ten of all tech jobs advertised through their JobWire service in the first two weeks of December was for a community manager position. FreshMinds Talent has also noticed this increasing trend, working on roles in this space for a host of different clients over the past three months.

My gut instinct is that it’s a recruitment pattern that will only increase in the new year. We sit in the same office as FreshNetworks, and the buzz around their business and the communities they are building has brought immense energy to the whole FreshMinds group. In a climate where any genuine growth can feel like a safe port in a storm, the excitement surrounding the social media industry should be a lift to anyone with an interest in what they do. If you want to find out more about the sector, get in touch or take a look at Matt’s Online Community Manager LinkedIn group.

Hi Charlie, thanks for the mention of the ReadWriteWEb Jobwire. Those aren’t advertised jobs, though, those are jobs we’re reporting on people having secured. We report on new hires in tech and new media at Jobwire.
